Bus Engineering Scheme

Achieve Chartered Engineer status

The scheme typically comprises two years of training and two years experience leading to achievement of Chartered Engineer status.

You will need to have an accredited MEng or BEng degree which will in turn require to be suitably matched with the relevant Institution.

We offer experience predominantly in bus maintenance, repair and fleet reliability operations management, however project and contract management experience is also facilitated in a demanding commercial environment.

Bus engineering engages directly with the public in a demanding commercial environment, encompassing all disciplines to the very highest level and covering a wide range of technology from established to the latest advances. Our bus operating companies are seeking Mechanical, Electrical and Electronic graduate Engineers for their engineering programme. This follows a Monitored Professional Development Scheme (MPDS) to achieve the Chartered Engineer status required for senior positions within the industry.

The MPDS you will pursue is an established nationally agreed scheme registered with the Inst. of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

The Scheme

The scheme typically comprises two years training, followed by two years experience in a role with management leadership responsibilities. You will be assigned a mentor who is a senior member of the industry, as well as a Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer, who will help guide and assist you though the scheme. They will also provide the Engineering Institution with assessment of your progress over the full four years. You will be expected to provide reports and observations on your experience, understanding and the contributions you have made throughout this time.

In addition to general management skills, the training period will offer experience in areas such as: bus maintenance, operation and repair; design and modification; fleet reliability; project and contract management; safety.

You will normally be based at two of our Bus Operating companies (Bus OpCo's) during your two year training as well as having placement within and outwith the bus industry to provide you with a broad and contrasting experience. Whilst much of the training and experience will be gained 'in-house', you will also have the opportunity to attend external seminars and courses.

To join the scheme you will need to have an accredited MEng degree or accredited BEng degree (BEng degrees normally require a suitable matching section to be completed - this can be agreed with the relevant Engineering institution once entry onto the scheme has been made and you will be assisted in your matching section application).
