  • How do I apply for a position?

    When you first apply for a position, you will be asked to register your details and create a secure account with us. You will then receive an e-mail confirming your username and password which will then allow you to log in and apply for any vacancies you see advertised.

    Our site also has the facility for you to request a job alert. You can select key words such as location, and division to help you find the right job. When a job becomes available you will receive an email to tell you that a vacancy in that job category is now open.

    Please remember to check our website and your email account periodically to ensure that you are kept up to date with any outstanding applications and also for news of any new vacancies which are available throughout FirstGroup.

  • What age can I start working with First?

    This depends on the role you are applying for, the minimum age is 16 as long as you are not going to be working late nights and early mornings - If you are applying for a safety critical role or a bus driver then the requirement is that you are over 18, and to become a trainee train driver is over 21. We do not have an upper age limit on any of our vacancies

  • What if there are no vacancies that match my skills?

    Our job alert service allows you to register to receive our newest vacancies via email, tailored to your specific skills.

  • Can I apply even if I've applied to work for First in the past?

    If an application has been unsuccessful, you cannot apply for a job in the same job category within 3 months. If you have been unsuccessful at an assessment or interview you cannot apply for a job in the same job category within 6 months. You can however apply for jobs that are under a different job category. For all current vacancies please visit our website at

  • I don't have internet access at home. Can I still apply?

    Please use other facilities such as your local library, job centre or local internet cafe. If you don't have an email address you can get one here.

  • How are applications short-listed?

    When you submit your completed application it will be scored and you will receive an automatic email. You can log onto the system to follow your application through the process. The same rules are applied to every application so it's a level playing field for everyone. It's also the best way for you to show us that you meet our basic criteria.

    For some roles you may be screened out at the initial application stage because you live over a certain distance and or travelling time from your designated place of work.

    Please also note that it is not First's policy to check social networking sites when short-listing candidates.

    Alerts informing you of the progress of your application will be emailed to you, remember to check your emails regularly and respond quickly to any requests so that you do not miss out on potential opportunities.

  • How will I hear about my application?

    We will contact you via the e-mail address you have provided with any updates regarding your application. Please make a contact in your email address book to ensure the emails get through to you and also check your spam or junk mail as occasionally emails from First may go in there.

    We may use telephone if you are successful at your assessments or interview. However this will depend on that particular recruitment process and e-mail will remain the main method of communication.

  • What's the next stage of the application process?

    Applicants' who are best matched to the job criteria will be invited to move onto the next stage of the recruitment process which could be online testing, assessment event or interview. All candidates will be contacted via email to inform them of their application status.

  • What are we looking for?

  • Do you recruit for part time positions?

    Yes, some of our roles are available as part time and this would be specified in the job details if it is available.

  • Will you telephone me with updates?

    We will contact you via your chosen e-mail address with any updates regarding your application. We may use telephone if you are successful in being invited for assessments or an interview. However this will be dependant on that particular recruitment process and e-mail will remain the main method of communication.

  • What will I be paid?

  • What other benefits will I get?

  • What are the working hours?

    First is a 24/7 business and many of our positions involve shift work. It's best to be as flexible as possible. You should find the hours of work within the job details.

  • What training will I receive?

    Once you join First, you'll benefit from a full and engaging Induction programme. You'll be welcomed into the company and learn about First Operations in the UK and beyond. After your Induction you will take part in a training programme tailored to your role, this is to ensure that you feel confident and able to do your job and to support you in delivering exceptional customer service standards and a high level of safety to our customers.

  • What are the development opportunities?

    Due to the variety and range of jobs we offer across the company, we can't describe all of our training and development courses here but we can say that we have an impressive range of training resources at hand which allows us to offer development programmes to all employees, many of which lead to recognised vocational qualifications. We also believe in recruiting from within First wherever possible and are proud that many of our appointments are internal.

  • Can I apply for more than one role?

    Yes, but some of our jobs are very specific in terms of experience and qualifications (given their safety or technical nature) so please remember this when preparing your application and give priority to those details that you feel are most relevant. Sending out the same application for every job will not make you stand out.

  • What documents should I take to my assessment/interview?

    Your email invitation will give you all the details on what documentation you should bring with you.

  • Do I need to go through any checks before being employed?

    Everyone will be expected to produce evidence of their Right to Work within the UK and this will be checked at interview stage, failure to produce this will result in your application being withdrawn.

    Some successful candidates will be required to undergo a medical and/or drugs and alcohol test. The level of medical is dependant on the type of role you have applied for.

    Some of our Divisions will carry out CRB checks on potential candidates.

  • Where can I get more information on skills needed to be a train driver?

  • I have points on my drivers licence, can I still apply for train and bus driver roles?

    If you have points on your licence you can still apply for roles with FirstGroup. However please be aware that within a competitive field of candidates, having points on your licence may prove to be a disadvantage. For bus driver roles we do not accept applications if you have more than 3 points on your licence.

  • Can I email with a question or to follow up my application?

    If you have any specific question please look at the FAQ's first as your query may be answered, if not you can email the central resourcing team on your email will be responded to within 36hrs.

  • My application is saying it is incomplete, what should I do?

    You will need to log back into your account, click on Career Centre, then select Application Submission History and then click on the link which says Incomplete and it will take you back into your application, you will then be able to follow the process through to complete your application in full.

    Please note you will not be able to complete your application once the closing date has passed.

    We have recently condensed our application form to one page. Please check that you have answered all of the relevant and mandatory questions.   • Are there any medical standards or fitness requirements to join First?

    Safety of our customers and our people is our number one priority and all employees must be medically fit to undertake the work required of them.

    Additionally all employees must meet laid down standards if undertaking work involving:

    • train / bus driving
    • train / bus preparation
    • train dispatch
    • on-train operational duties
    • shunting / movement of vehicles
    • train / bus vehicle maintenance
    • the holding of a personal track safety (PTS) certificate
    • other employees undertaking safety critical roles or roles that require being, or having the potential to be, near moving vehicles

    First's policy also states that you may be required to be tested for Drugs and Alcohol levels, which is in keeping with First's safety culture.

  • Does First offer apprenticeships?

    Yes, we offer engineering and customer service apprenticeships and we recruit annually to fill these positions. To ensure that you are made aware when these roles are advertised, you can register your details to receive a job alert by email.

  • Can I email with a question or to follow up my application?

    If you have any specific role related questions you can email the central resourcing team on your email will be responded to within 24hrs.

  • How can I change my personal information?

    To change your details you need to logon, access the careers centre and then Change address / email details, then click on Change address / email details again in the next screen, update the information then click submit when done.

  • What can I expect at an interview?

    The interview may be competency based and it helps if you can give specific examples when giving your answers to help explain. Dependent on the role you maybe well be asked some technical questions to help the interviewers gain more information about your qualifications and understanding.

  • Will I have to wear a uniform?

    Many of our jobs are front line customer facing and you will be provided with a uniform and relevant guidelines. There are other roles where you may be provided with personal protective equipment. Where a uniform is not required we always expect you to look professional in your appearance.

  • Storage and sharing of information

    We will store the information you provide to us for a limited time only after your application. Our strict privacy procedures will ensure that all your information remains confidential throughout this time. After this time, de-personalised statistical information may be kept for the purposes of recruitment monitoring statistics, however, no individuals will be identifiable from this data.

    Your information will not be passed onto third parties unless required by law or in order to, for example, take up references or carry out disclosure in relation to the Criminal Records Bureau. You will be informed before this is done unless legal requirements dictate otherwise.

    The only information that is shared and remains confidential are any regulated assessment results for Train Conductors and Drivers which are stored on a shared database accessible by other Train Operators.

    Should your application be successful and we require further information from you such as bank details, information for Criminal Records disclosure, information regarding health or evidence of qualifications and/or eligibility to work in the United Kingdom, we will contact you first and may ask you to provide this information via a personal secure on-line account.   • Check the status of your application

    To check the status of your application you need to login, access the careers centre click on application submission history, this will then show the current status of your application/s.

    If your application status is awaiting shortlisting it is currently being reviewed by the line manager, and as soon as we have received the results we will contact you by email with the outcome of your application.

    Unfortunately we do not have time scales on how long the shortlisting takes and trainee train driver roles can take some months due to the number of applications we receive and checks that need to be carried out prior to assessments.

  • What if there are no vacancies I wish to apply for?

    All of our current vacancies are advertised on our website. If there are not any vacancies you wish to apply for you can set up a job alert which allows you to register to receive our newest vacancies via email, tailored to your specific skills.

  • The website will not accept my password, what shall I do?

    Please ensure you are doing the following when creating your account:

    - Your password must contain a minimum of 8 letters (first letter must be a capital) followed by 1 number (for example: Password1)

    - When entering your mobile telephone number put +44 in front and do not use the first 0 (example: +447890123456)

    - When entering your NI number please do not leave spaces in between letters and numbers (example: AB123456C)

  • How long does the recruitment process take?

    In most circumstances our vacancies will be advertised for a period of two weeks. However when applying for any roles please check the closing date to be certain. Once the vacancy has closed we will screen any applications received and endeavour to contact all applicants as soon as possible to advise of their application status.
