First Monster Challenge

The First Monster Challenge is a 120km team relay duathlon around the stunning shores of Loch Ness in the Highlands of Scotland.

Hosted and organised by FirstGroup, the event is for teams of four. Each team member must complete one running section (roughly 10km) and one cycling section (roughly 20km) of the eight legged event. It has gained a reputation for being a tough event, but extremely good fun and well organised.

History

The event made its debut in September 2007 with around 65 teams taking part. First Monster has gone from strength to strength and this year's event, which will take place on 3 September 2011, promises to sell out again.

Charity

FirstGroup encourages every competitor to use the Monster as a means of raising money for charity. As well as First's national charity partner Save the Children, lots of other charities have benefited from the event. In 2010, First Monster Challenge competitors raised more than £188k for good causes.

Celebrity

The event attracts a few famous faces. Model Nell McAndrew has taken part in the event three times so far. Kyran Bracken, Alastair Campbell, Ben Fogle, Liz McColgan and Gavin Hastings have also gone into battle against the Monster. Sally Gunnell enjoyed last year's event so much, she's bringing two teams back for First Monster 11.

Iron Monster

For the superfit, FirstGroup has introduced a truly gruelling event. Iron Monster competitors complete the 120km course solo. This event runs alongside the First Monster Challenge and is growing ever more popular with around 35 participants opting to take on the Iron Monster in 2011.
