Paul Lawrie - Junior Golf
The Paul Lawrie Junior Golf Development Programme was devised soon after Paul Lawrie won the Open in 1999. The aim is to offer children the opportunity to:
- Experience the game
- Improve their skills
- Ease the transition from participation to the club environment
- Play to the best of their ability or interest
The programme involves training teachers at participating primary schools to give lessons during PE periods for pupils from P4 upwards, using plastic clubs and sponge balls. It proceeds with support for coaching and the organisation of flag days and local tournaments throughout primary and secondary schools until the young golfer is ready to become a fully-fledged member of a golf club.
Paul is a local Aberdonian lad and is a great ambassador for First. The Paul Lawrie Junior Programme is a fantastic example of a leading sportsman putting something back into the game that's given him so much. Moir Lockhead our chief executive says "For several years First has been a major supporter of Paul Lawrie Junior Golf – it is a fantastic initiative and particularly rewarding when I see first hand the enthusiasm and passion that the sport can draw from children of such a young age.”
