Local Partnerships

In the areas of the UK and North America where we operate we work closely with local charities and community initiatives, and provide them with many forms of support - by charitable donations and sponsorships, with free or subsidised transport for special events,  by assistance in advertising or through voluntary input by our staff.

Food drives - North America

In North America many of our First Student buses are used in food drives which deliver food to those in need.

Health and education buses

In partnership with Portsmouth Football Club we have established two education buses containing 18 computers. The buses will deliver healthy eating and family education across the Portsmouth area.

Anti-vandalism bus

First has donated a double-decker bus for conversion into a mobile resource for schools, local authorities and other organisations in Aberdeenshire. The project aims to teach children and young people about the dangers and consequences of crime and vandalism.

Teaching Zone

First Rail Support (FRS) launched an innovative, internet-based project to help UK teachers educate schoolchildren about safety and anti-social behaviour on and around buses and trains. Every school day, hundreds of teachers use the Teaching Zone website to prepare and deliver lessons to primary and secondary school pupils.

FRS has worked with educational experts to design a number of information sheets and lesson plans for schoolchildren on a range of bus and train travel topics. The site, www.teachingzone.org, is easy to download and has been successfully trailed with a number of Lancashire schools. FRS is now rolling out the project to schools across the UK.

The Forestry Commissions Green Grants Scheme

First TransPennine Express and the Forestry Commission are inspiring people to make a positive improvement to their community and improve their local environment. The Green Grants are available for local environmental improvements in relation to trees and/or woodlands for the benefit of the community.

First engineering graduates support Smallpeice charity

FirstGroup engineering graduates have supported Smallpeice, an independent charity which promotes engineering careers amongst young people. First supported events for 13-14 year old school students interested in a career in engineering. Over 100 students from a wide range of schools attend three day residential events to inspire their interest in engineering.
