Outward Bound
First is proud to be a major supporter of The Outward Bound Trust through the Patron's Company Bursary Fund. During the last ten years disadvantaged young people between the ages of 11-18 years and of many ethnic backgrounds have taken part in challenging outdoor experiences as a result of our continued support of The Outward Bound Trust.
"We are all better than we know. If only we can be brought to realise this we will never again be prepared to settle for anything less."
Kurt Hahn, Co-founder Outward Bound ®
"I now believe I can do things I never thought I could do before. My lasting memory will be all the new friends I made. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to reach a higher level."
Sherisse McFarlane, 15
Outward Bound ® is the UK leader in supportive and challenging outdoor adventures focused on personal development. It aims to inspire young people to realise their potential through experiences in the outdoors, helping them to overcome their fears, raising their self-esteem and preparing them to face whatever life throws at them with confidence, respect and compassion.
We are proud to have been associated with this educational charity for the past ten years and through financial support and the provision of facilities, to have contributed to the development of thousands of deserving young persons in the UK. In 2006-7 we supported 83 young people to experience challenge, reward, exhilaration and pride through completing an Outward Bound ® residential course. They came from:
- Heathland School, Hounslow
- St James' Catholic High School, London
- Clarendon School, Hampton
- The Lammas School, London
Outward Bound ® offers a different learning environment. The mountains and the sea have provided an outdoor classroom for over a million young people since its foundation in 1941. In the next year alone, a further 26,000 will complete a high ropes course, build a raft or abseil for the first time in their lives. These young people will complete their Outward Bound ® adventure as part of a residential course at one of the Trust's centres in inspiring UK locations - Ullswater and Eskdale in The English Lake District, Loch Eil near Scotland's Fort William and Aberdovey on the Welsh coast.
Today, the Government recognises that an outdoor experience such as Outward Bound ® develops skills and attributes critical for the challenges facing young people at school and as they enter the world of work.
The Outward Bound Trust is a non-profit making, educational charity, with over 65 years' achievement. All funds are invested in the organisation, providing more courses for young people who would otherwise not have the opportunity.
