Climate Change & Environment
Public transport contributes significantly to the reduction of emissions from travel. Buses and trains produce fewer emissions per passenger km than other forms of transport such as car or air travel. Our role is to provide public transport that supports communities and their economies while also improving quality of life by lowering air emissions and congestion and offering low-carbon travel options.
Our environmental management programme is led by the Group Head of Environment (supported by a Senior Environmental Manager in North America) and by environmental professionals across the business. Our operating companies all work to minimum environmental standards (regarding regulatory requirements and identified environmental impacts) against which they are periodically audited.
In the UK all our operating companies have gained accreditation to the environmental management system standard ISO14001. We also achieved the Carbon Trust Standard in 2011, recognising our efforts to reduce carbon emissions across all our UK operations. All our franchised train operating companies have achieved the ISO 50001 energy management standard.
Our commitment to reduce our carbon emissions and associated targets is set out in our Climate Change Strategy.
Performance against targets 2012/13
|Reduce non-carbon emissions per passenger km by 4% in our UK Bus division||+1.65%|
|Reduce energy use in buildings by 2% in our UK Bus division||-0.94%|
|Reduce energy use in buildings by 1% in our UK Rail division||-0.91%|
|Reduce energy use in our top 100 properties by 2% in North America||-1.1%|
|Reduce waste to landfill by 8% in our UK Bus division||-21%|
|Reduce waste to landfill by 2% in our UK Rail division||-4.5%|
|Reduce waste arising by 2% in North America||-2.6%|
|Reduce waste to landfill by 2% in North America||-3.07%|
Note: UK energy data has been normalised by degree days to take account of variations in weather conditions from year to year. North American data has not been normalised.
In this section you can find out about how we are cutting carbon emissions from vehicles, buildings, business travel and our supply chain. Performance trends and data can be found here.
We continue to invest in new vehicles which meet more stringent emissions standards. Further details can be found in this section. Emissions data can be found here.
Water is primarily used for cleaning our vehicles and train units to maintain customer satisfaction in service quality. Further details can be found in this section. Water usage data can be found here.
