Security UK Bus

We want to ensure our passengers travel with us in as safe and secure a manner as possible. In accordance with our absolute commitment to safety we continue to enhance the security of our passengers, our staff and our property.

We have taken steps to analyse our security risks and tailor an approach which mitigates these as far as we reasonably can.

Specifically, we have responded to the continuing threat from terrorism by maintaining staff awareness and advising them of the role they play in managing suspicious circumstances. Measures include:

  • Anti-Terror Alert posters for all depots in the UK;
  • the issue of a personal aide-memoire card to all drivers giving guidance on dealing with suspicious incidents;
  • guidance to managers on how to respond to a driver reporting a suspicious incident;
  • periodic updates to managers regarding the continuing terrorist threat and the need for staff to maintain vigilance.

We want to heighten the profile of security by actively engaging senior management in the process. Members of the security team visit sites to help improve standards and raise awareness at all levels.

Senior managers are now required to conduct 'security tours' alongside the existing 'safety tours' and have been issued with aide-memoire cards to assist them in this process.

To encourage buy-in from our front-line staff we are developing a bespoke DVD based training package covering security issues. This will become part of the induction programme for new staff and supplement training programmes for existing staff. The training will give guidance on how to respond to a variety of issues ranging from terrorism to depot security and will stress individual responsibility in these matters. In addition, we are reviewing the role of technology in maximising security.

Ensuring the suitability of our employees to carry out their roles, in particular where they may be in contact with children and vulnerable adults, is an important part of our security programme. Background checks are essential for those engaged in these duties. In the United Kingdom these checks are controlled by legislation and provided by government agencies. Our policies demonstrate our commitment to this process. We are also actively working to encourage the government to strengthen and streamline the protective legislation in this area.

In addition to these business-wide enhancements, we also encourage our individual operating companies to develop their own complementary approaches to security. Examples include the involvement of a number of our companies in anti-vandalism campaigns and partnerships with local police forces.
