Emissions to Air
Trains are important in cutting air emissions from surface transport as emissions per passenger kilometre are much lower than cars. However, exhaust emissions from a largely diesel-powered fleet impacts on air quality.
We calculate these emissions using manufacturer's data for newer vehicles and measurements taken by British Rail pre-privatisation for the older vehicles.
Total emissions from our vehicles have increased this year. This is as expected, due to the introduction of additional diesel-powered vehicles associated with the new First Great Western franchise and the new, more powerful engines in the fleet. Emissions per passenger kilometre have also increased but as new vehicles are attracting greater passenger growth we anticipate that emissions per passenger kilometre will start to decrease in the near future.
