Improving Our Stations

A significant investment programme in new and improved station facilities totalled £12 million during the last 12 months. Improvements included the redecoration of waiting rooms, toilets and booking halls, better customer information systems and upgraded access and security measures. Some specific examples of these investments are provided below.

  • In partnership with Fife Council First ScotRail have installed state-of-the-art flat screen Customer Information Systems at ten Fife stations giving up-to-the-minute service information. TPE has installed similar systems across all their stations combined with a new public address system designed to synchronise with Customer Information System screens.
  • Aberdeen station has started a multi-million pound refurbishment programme. It will involve the installation of automatic ticket gates, improved security and better disabled access.
  • First Capital Connect station at St Albans will be the subject of a £20 million investment to improve disabled access, provide additional car parking, improve the bus interchange and allow more space for cycles and retail outlets.
  • This year we completed the upgrading of Windermere station which now has a new integrated, fully accessible booking hall and ticket office.
  • Grange-over-Sands station has been upgraded. For example, a former store has been refurbished to create a passenger waiting room. It has been sympathetically restored and its original timber floor preserved to retain the station's heritage.

We continue to invest in our stations and car parks to achieve security accreditation. Details can be found in the Security section of this report.
