Emissions to Air
The use of trains is an important factor in reducing air emissions from surface transport. Emissions per passenger kilometre of train travel are much lower than for cars. However, the operation of a largely diesel-powered fleet has an impact on air quality from exhaust emissions.
We calculate these emissions using manufacturers’ data for newer vehicles and measurements taken by British Rail prior to privatisation for the older vehicles.
This year we have seen some significant reductions in the emissions of other air pollutants. reflecting our investment in re-engineering of the First Great Western high-speed train fleet.
