Climate Change
Our estimated carbon footprint is 3,010,781 tonnes. Most of these emissions result from the operation of our trains and buses. Energy use in buildings and business mileage make only a small contribution.
Our total emissions (tonnes carbon dioxide)
This year we have further refined our carbon footprint data for North America. Fuel purchased by our customers and business travel have now been included. We believe we now have a comprehensive data set for monitoring progress going forward. We have revised our baseline data for North America in line with this new data.
Overall we have achieved a reduction of 2% in our total carbon emissions on the previous year. The carbon savings arise directly from our efforts to reduce emissions through improved fuel efficiency. For example, in our UK Bus division our average carbon dioxide emissions per vehicle kilometre have reduced by 2.3% and in our UK Rail division by 6% since 2008. Part of the reduction reflects the need to cut mileage in a number of areas of the business due to the economic downturn. We continue to reduce our carbon emissions per kilometre and per passenger journey through investment in technology and improvements to our servicing and vehicle management systems.
Through our Climate Change Strategy we remain committed to reducing our carbon footprint.
