Local Air Quality

We continue to invest in reducing local air emissions from our fleet with the purchase of new trains and buses. In the UK our bus fleet now comprises 52% EURO III engines and 20% EURO IV and V engines.

Data for UK Rail does not include indirect emissions from electric energy used by our electric trains.

The reporting period is January to December for each reporting year.

Since last year the EPA SmartWay Fleet model which we use to calculate our non carbon emissions has been updated. Particulates data is now calculated as PM2.5 rather than total particulates and the model only calculates emissions of NOx and PM2.5; we are therefore unable to provide data on Hydrocarbons and Carbon Monoxide this year. The emission factors in the model have also changed from the previous year making data comparisons difficult.
