Water
Our primary use of water is for washing our vehicles. Clean vehicles are important to our customers' perception of quality of service and we must balance our desire to reduce water use with customer expectations. In our UK Bus division we have bus washes which partially recycle water across all depots (total recycling systems cannot replenish water fast enough for bus washing purposes).
This year we have reduced total water usage in the UK by 6%. We have used specialist consultants to advise on how we can reduce water in key depots and we continue to identify and manage leaks. Water usage per bus has reduced by 13% and water usage per rail vehicle has increased slightly this year but reduced by 17% in the last two years. In North America water usage has remained fairly consistent in the period with a less than 1% increase.
