FirstGroup Hosts Bowel Cancer Awareness Day
Friday 4 May 2012
Staff at FirstGroup, the leading transport operator in the UK and North America, were warned of the dangers of bowel cancer recently by a leading charity.
Bowel Cancer UK, as part of its Scottish awareness programme, visited staff at FirstGroup’s Aberdeen headquarters (25 April) and delivered a presentation aimed at educating and informing staff about the deadly disease.
John Evans, FirstGroup’s HR Director, said: “Bowel Cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in the UK, affecting both men and women. Every year over 40,000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer and more than 16,000 people die of the disease. We wanted our staff to be aware of the symptoms and how to minimise the risk of contracting bowel cancer.”
Emma Anderson, Head of Operations of Bowel Cancer UK’s Scottish operations, said she was delighted that the charity was returning to FirstGroup following a presentation to First Aberdeen bus drivers last month. She said: “I’m grateful to FirstGroup for the opportunity to help raise awareness of bowel cancer and to protect people’s lives.”
She added: “A recent survey by Bowel Cancer UK found that nearly a third of people (30%) in Scotland would be put off going to the doctor with a potentially serious symptom because they would be worried about what the diagnosis may be. The survey also worryingly showed that a quarter of people in Scotland would be too scared (25%) or feel awkward (21%) about discussing a symptom with their doctor if one arose.”
