ScotRail operates 95% of passenger train services in Scotland, linking the cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness as well as the Caledonian Sleeper overnight service to and from London, and the picturesque routes of Fort William, Mallaig, Oban, Kyle and Wick.

  • Commenced operation in October 2004 (franchise was extended to March 2015 by Transport Scotland)
  • 83m Passenger journeys in 2011/12, up by more than 30% since the start of the franchise
  • 2,300 services operated per day, up 300 since 2004, with 130 new vehicles introduced
  • Won National Train Operator of the Year at the National Transport Awards for two years running (2009 and 2010) and 2012 Scottish Public Transport Operator of the Year
  • One of the first train operating companies to sign an alliance agreement with Network Rail, delivering savings including substantial cost reductions on the Paisley Canal line electrification project
  • 93% punctuality and reliability in most recent period, up from 84% at the start of the franchise
  • Passenger satisfaction of 90% in autumn 2012, above the national average
