First appointments are driven by the needs of the business at that time. However typical first posts in the past have been:
Rail
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing minute-by-minute management of the station, ensuring that all service standards are met.
- Working in close liaison with the Station Operation Managers to ensure a safe and punctual train service is operated from the station.
- Being responsible for all aspects of service from the station, including where applicable, ticket office, concourse, customer information desks, information and customer service, gateline, train dispatch and train/station cleaning.
- Being an integral part of the delivery of the service and will play a hands on role in ensuring standards are met by having the dispatch of trains, ticket sales and train cleaning included as part of their daily workload
Key responsibilities include:
- Being responsible on shift for effectively managing train performance
- Proactively manage on shift operational arrangements between Signal Boxes and TOCs, in order to minimise delays
- Liaison with all Train Operating Companies' Controls, take the lead in dealing with the operational implications of late arrivals / departures, short notice alterations to train services, overcrowding, security alerts, Traincrew resourcing issues, etc. at Bristol tonsure train performance is optimised.
- Oversee the implementation of short notice service alterations between TOC and Network Rail Control Offices and relevant Train Operators' staff.
Key responsibilities include:
- To manage and ensure effective delivery of suitable projects
- To ensure cross-functional working across all departments as required.
- To produce Project Mandates to effectively assess the viability and suitability of each project prior to the production of the full business case.
- To successfully deliver approved projects ensuring they are within agreed tolerances (e.g. budgets, timescales, project scope, risks etc.).
- To provide regular Status Reports and updates

- Responsible for delivery of the train plan and on train product
- Provision of adequate competent resources at your depot to deliver the train plan within your area of responsibility.
- Develop and deliver a consistent professional approach to people management and employee relations within your area of responsibility.
- Ensure the local Train Plan is met safely and effectively by developing, maintaining and leading a highly motivated and competent workforce of Traincrew based at your depot(s).
- Ensure the highest levels of customer service excellence are delivered through effective and consistent achievement of service standards and specifications, and development of highly motivated, competent and professional on board crews within your depot(s).
- Effectively manage performance targets for your area of responsibility
Key responsibilities include:
- Management of overnight servicing and timely delivery of rolling stock for morning service
- Management of exam and maintenance program for rolling stock
- Efficient management of both people and resources
- Service recovery following incidents or failures
- The development and performance of team leaders and teams along with the instigation of management procedures where required
- Producing and achieving plans and targets for depot output that are aligned to business needs
Bus
Key responsibilities include:
- Involved in making sure that the service is actually run efficiently on the road with minimum disruption.
- Ensure that there are not too many gaps in service
- Liaise with councils and gain info on future roadworks and diversions etc.
- On road observations and supervision
- Other management tasks as required.
- SDM's have controllers on the road at certain key points. They curtail bus's when necessary etc.
Key responsibilities include:
- Actively promote a workplace health and safety culture.
- Responsible for daily management of a bus depot, Service group or operational team
- Compliance with Regulatory and Statutory requirements
- Ensure services are operated to the highest possible standards of reliability and punctuality
- Manage and motivate key operational staff
- Close and regular functional liaison with key colleagues to ensure a shared and owned responsibility for the delivery of service.
- Regular contact with customers, key stakeholders and regulatory bodies
Key responsibilities include:
- Actively train, develop and manage operational staff at all levels within the organisation
- Clear communication of the Company's goals, objectives and targets combined with excellent leadership skills to ensure ownership throughout the organisation
- Responsible for ensuring that all staff meet the expectations and standards of the Company
- Coaching and mentoring drivers
- Conducting investigations and disciplinary hearings
- Attending to staff welfare, holiday requests
- Identifying training needs
- All of the above needs to be done in liaison with Trade Union reps, various departmental staff in a timely and cost effective manner
- Achieve attendance targets, and various budgetary targets
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop procedures and plans for the Project to ensure commonality of processes, documentation and systems wherever possible
- Manage all activities associated with the project to deliver requirements to required quality, on time and on budget
- Gain commitment from all interested parties
- Identify and establish communication links with related projects and manage the risks that any interdependencies may pose
- Identify, manage and escalate if appropriate, potential or existing issues which if left unchecked, could impact the project
