Production Manager Rishi Ravindran

Rishi Ravindran - Production Manager, First Great Western

During the last year of my Mechanical Engineering degree, like many students,
Rishi Ravindran I too was uncertain about my future after I graduated. My dilemma was that although I enjoyed engineering, I was equally keen on management. Having a specialised degree often limits opportunity in other arenas such as finance or management. When an engineering management opportunity with one of UK's premier train operating companies arose, I took the chance only to enjoy it.

I started of with an 18 month training scheme which included lots of travel, both national and international.
I went to places ranging from Inverness to London and Plymouth to Germany experiencing the railways and working on projects involved with design, management, production and finance. I received a fair dosage of engineering coupled with an excellent training plan targeted at personal development.

After my training, I took up my first post as a Site Engineer,
working on a new depot based in Manchester. The depot is a unique collaboration between First Group and Siemens. Apart from day-to-day activities, I was primarily responsible for implementing processes, monitoring contracts and developing relations with suppliers. Shortly after commencing my Site Engineers role I expressed an interest in a more senior man-management position. Only after 7 months I've been offered a Production Manager's position with one of First Group's companies in Bristol.

A Production Managers post is one that encompasses aspects often encountered in a variety of positions.
I deal with engineering projects, commercial issues, contractual commitments and most interesting of all, people issues. Everyday is unique with different challenges ranging from legislation to train design. It's a very favourable platform for both professional and personal development.

I've got two more years on the Monitored Professional Development Scheme at the end of which I'd be qualified as a Chartered Engineer.
This again is supported by the company. Through out my tenure with First Group, one aspect of my scheme has always been consistent. It is the mentoring and support provided to nurture my aspirations. First Group takes mentoring seriously and are very dedicated to support graduates in any way possible. I've benefited and enjoyed my years with First Group and eagerly await my future in this dynamic establishment.
