Rail Development Route

A hands on training scheme

The training scheme is designed to be hands-on with extensive opportunities to learn through shadowing and project work. However, to learn the theoretical knowledge underpinning railway operations and staff management, you will attend several training courses, as well as taking part in a prestigious, nationally recognised, degree course with the Institution of Railway Operators.

Training courses and Management Development

You'll attend courses alongside other new staff covering topics such as personal track safety, first aid, train evacuation, station knowledge and disability awareness.

Institution of Railway Operators - Degree level course

The Institution of Railway Operators (IRO) is the UK's national body for railway operations professionals, and offers scope for professional development, networking and access to education programmes.

You will be enrolled on the degree level course with the IRO in partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU).

Once you have successfully completed the course you will be awarded a BSc and will be eligible for full membership of the IRO. Completion of the course is a highly regarded and prestigious professional qualification.

The courses provide in depth knowledge on a variety of subjects that are key to being a successful railway operations manager.

The course is divided into a number of modules, each of which has been written and developed by experienced managers in that particular field. Tutors designated to mark and provide feedback on each module are also highly experienced and have been accredited by GCU. All students and tutors are supported by GCU throughout the programme.

rail development programme

The course consists of the following modules:

  • Personal and Professional Development through work-based learning
  • Managing Passenger and Freight Operations
  • Safety Law and Management (Part 2)
  • Train Planning and Performance Management (Part 2)
  • Train Movement Control Systems
  • Emergency Planning, Mishap Management and Investigation
  • Railway Engineering
  • Railway Economics
  • An Integrated work-based project

After an introductory weekend in Glasgow, the course will be taught through distance learning methods. You will be required to undertake study of web based or other supplied materials, additional recommended reading & research, analysis of case studies and project work and communicate with tutors by e-mail. It is estimated that at least seven hours study per week will be required each year. It is estimated that students will take between 12 and 24 months to complete the programme.

Assessment will be based on course and project work and by interview at an end-of-course assessment panel.

Project Work

As part of your programme of shadowing, you will undertake a project work, which has real value to the business. This might involve writing a report for senior managers on an operational issue; analysing data and making recommendations for the commercial team; or helping develop a plan for a new initiative. You will be expected to make a real contribution, and your work may influence business decisions across the company.

You may also be asked to undertake a project, which is separate from your scheduled placements - reflecting the real business where managers often spend some time seconded to another project alongside their usual role. This may make use of your insights and experience in various areas of the company, and will have a real value to the business.

Corporate Social Responsibility

First is committed to corporate social responsibility: the awareness of the economic, social and environmental impact of the company's activities on the wider community. Examples of how First is a leader in this field include the new Injury Prevention Programme; the trial of low emission buses and train diesel; the Total Rewards scheme and NVQ qualifications for staff; and upgraded stations and bus facilities.

You will be expected to enhance the business and your own personal development through a project related to corporate social responsibility.
