FirstGroup America Named Recipient of National Safety Councils 2009 Green Cross for Safety Medal

FirstGroup America announced today that it has been selected as the recipient of the 2009 Green Cross for Safety Medal from the National Safety Council (NSC). FirstGroup America, part of FirstGroup PLC, is the largest transportation company in North America. FirstGroup employs 100,000 people across North America and operates First Student, the largest provider of student transportation in North America; First Transit, the largest private provider of transit management and contracting services; First Services, the largest privately owned vehicle maintenance service business and Greyhound, the national provider of scheduled inter-city bus services.
As announced by the NSC at its 96th Annual Congress & Expo in Anaheim this week, the decision to present FirstGroup with the Green Cross for Safety Medal reflects the National Safety Council’s recognition of FirstGroup’s strong safety culture, the company’s commitment to its core values of safety and customer service, and its outstanding safety record.
Safety and customer service underpin everything at FirstGroup, from its Injury Prevention program, safety policies and training to its focus on vehicle maintenance, community support and environmental initiatives.
“This medal is a testament to the focus on safety of the entire organization. Our commitment to the safety of our employees and customers through our Injury Prevention Program means if you cannot do it safely don’t do it. I am extremely pleased and proud to receive this award on behalf of all staff at FirstGroup,” said FirstGroup Chief Executive, Sir Moir Lockhead.
NSC will present FirstGroup and Sir Moir with the Green Cross for Safety Medal at a special recognition dinner to be held in spring 2009. Past recipients of the Green Cross for Safety Medal include: Delta Air Lines, UPS, DuPont, Liberty Mutual Group, Chrysler Group of DaimlerChrysler, Kenny Construction Company, Ryder Systems Inc., Intel Corporation, and AK Steel Corporation.
