First Student Awarded Cincinnati Public Schools Transportation Contract
Tuesday 28 April 2009
District Estimates $11.5 Million Savings Compared to Current Contract
First Student, Inc., the nation’s leader in student transportation, today announced it has been given the full Cincinnati Public Schools student transportation contract, which was previously operated by three providers including First Student. School board members voted to give the entire contract to First Student, saving an estimated $11.5 million compared to the current contract. First Student is part of Cincinnati-based FirstGroup America, North America’s largest transportation company.
The five-year agreement includes the operation and maintenance of all student transportation services. First Student will expand its current fleet of 240 vehicles to 390 vehicles, with service beginning July 1, 2009. Significant savings were achieved through economies of scale, route optimization, and improved purchasing agreements.
Carey Paster, President and CEO of Commercial Development for FirstGroup America said: “We are very pleased to be selected as the single student transportation provider for Cincinnati Public Schools. By choosing First Student, the district is able to lower costs without compromising safety and focus limited resources on education rather than transportation. School buses already are the safest way for students to get to and from school, and First Student is happy to expand our service in our own community.”
First Student will recruit employees from both of the other current contractors provided they meet our high safety standards and pass background checks. First Student is also in the process of selecting new property in Cincinnati to house additional buses, adding to two locations already in place.
First Student's core values of safety and customer satisfaction are evident through the regular investments we make in our fleet, our adoption of new technologies and enactment of stringent safety policies and operational procedures. Our drivers are skilled professionals who are trained to provide the highest level of safety for the 3 million students we transport to and from school each day.
