Three-year contract includes operation, maintenance and management of 122 vehicles.
First Student, Inc., the nation’s leader in student transportation, has been awarded the contract to provide student transportation for the Decatur Public School District 61 in Decatur, Ill., beginning July 15, 2009. First Student is part of Cincinnati-based FirstGroup America, North America’s largest transportation company.
The contract is a three-year agreement which includes the operation, maintenance and management of a fleet of 122 vehicles. First Student will provide some of the industry’s latest technologies, including digital cameras on all buses. And these school buses, like all the buses in First Student’s fleet, will have high-definition GPS tracking systems installed by 2010. This state-of-the-art system effectively manages on-time performance while providing the exact location and speed of the school bus at any time. The Decatur Public School District is expected to save $275,000 for the first year of the contract with First Student and more than $480,000 over the first three years.
David Duke, senior vice president of sales for First Student, said: “We are pleased to be able to provide quality student transportation services for the Decatur Public Schools. School buses are clearly the safest way for children to get to and from school. Through this contract, the district can enjoy some of the latest advancements the school bus industry has to offer while retaining a significant savings.”
First Student will support the district in its efforts to optimize routing efficiencies and will evaluate all existing local employees who presently serve the district.
