First ScotRail has been recognised as an Investor in People (IiP)
24 July 2008
With over 4,100 employees in Scotland, First ScotRail is one of the largest private sector organisations to have attained IiP. It has been achieved in recognition of their work in delivering good practice and aligning business and people development strategies to improve business performance, further establishing the company as a reputable, quality employer.
First ScotRail has worked hard to provide and build the necessary foundations to enable staff to develop to their full potential. This has been done through such measures as –
• The delivery of a comprehensive learning and development calendar offering courses suitable for developing the skills of all area employees.
• Rail Union Learning Centres at six stations and depots across the network – with more to come in 2008.
• ‘Time with your manager’ sessions to ensure staff are being supported, as well as establishing best working practices.
• Staff engagement through annual management conferences.
• Regular information to keep staff informed on company news, including the publication of a quarterly magazine – ‘Between the Lines’.
• Development of a well equipped leadership team to guide the business in best practice and company values.
First ScotRail gained the accreditation in just three years, a significant achievement for such a large business.
Mary Grant, Managing Director at First ScotRail said, “Our staff are at the heart of our business and it is through them that we have achieved IiP accreditation. We recognise the importance of providing development opportunities for staff, involving them in our business planning and continually striving to be the best.”
Fiona Irvine, HR Director at First ScotRail added, “This achievement is testament to three years of hard work and support from staff and we are delighted to have been recognised for our efforts. This is just the start for us though - we are already aspiring towards gaining higher levels of IiP for the business.”
Peter Russian, Chief Executive of IiP Scotland said, “This award demonstrates the real commitment that First ScotRail is making to its people, and through them, to their customers. Most importantly the company has clearly recognised that investing in people isn’t a one-off project, but is in the lifeblood of the most successful and best performing companies”.
First ScotRail has committed to a yearly review against key IiP indicators to ensure the company continues to exceed expectations both internally and externally, communicate business goals and develop staff on a personal and professional level.
