BUS DRIVER OF THE YEAR COMPETITION 2009
Following last years victory, at which Ipswich-based First bus driver Leon Wells took the crown as the UKs "Bus Driver of the Year', First bus drivers will be put to the test with the eastern counties heat of the Bus Driver of the Year Competition 2009 at the Old Cattlemarket, Norwich on Tuesday 14th July.
The prestigious Bus Driver of The Year competition is an annual event which sees bus drivers from throughout the UK showcase their driving skills and customer care knowledge, with the top winners from the regional heats competing at the Grand Final in Blackpool.
Nine First drivers from Norwich, Bury St Edmunds, Great Yarmouth and Ipswich will undertake a theory and practical exam to test their driving skills and Highway Code knowledge.
The competition will consist of three sections, twenty questions on the Highway Code, twenty questions on basic maintenance and a driving section which will consist of a series of manoeuvring tests.
The specially laid out course will allow drivers to be tested on reverse manoeuvring, bus stop manoeuvres, right and left hand turns and "plank judgement'
Penalty points will be awarded and the aim is to finish with the least amount of points.
The top 3 placed winners will win vouchers worth £125, £75 and £25 respectively and will go forward to the national grand final in Blackpool on September 5th/6th.
Says Alan Pilbeam, Managing Director of First East England:
"All First drivers are committed to providing safe transport for their passengers. This competition is a fantastic way for them to showcase their knowledge and driving skills. Considering our victory at last years event we are hopeful of yet another great result.'
