Partnership
Our local transport authority is effectively Transport for London (TfL) and, as we are a contracted operator, everything we do is designed to serve their policies and guidelines.
In addition there are many projects, such as the Bus Driving Simulator or the Fuel Cell (see below) where we are formal partners. Between 2003 and 2006, in conjunction with TfL and other organisations, we operated three buses from our old Hackney depot which were the UK's first hydrogen fuel cell zero-emission buses. This was part of a pioneering European project to reduce air pollution and noise. The buses only emitted pure water vapour.
The experience gained by the Hackney team meant that First in London was Transport for London's preferred partner to operate the first of the next generation of hydrogen fuelled buses from the new site at Lea Interchange on the RV1 route.
Both the Mayor and TfL are committed to tackling climate change through cutting London's contribution to CO2 and other emissions; the Mayor having set tough targets to reduce CO2 emissions by 60 per cent by 2025 from 1990 levels.
These buses completely cutting out CO2 and other harmful emissions from the exhaust, they produce nothing but water vapour. Passengers enjoy a smoother, quieter ride as hydrogen powered buses are cleaner and quieter than conventional diesel buses.
