Bus Driver, Victor Griffith retires after 45 years of service

Victor GriffithVictor Griffith who until recently drove buses on route 10 at First’s Westbourne Park depot in north-west London, retired on 14 February 2008 after an amazing 45 years service with the company and its predecessors.

Victor’s last year has been a memorable one as earlier this month at the Bus, Tram and Dial-a-ride awards he received award from David Brown, Managing Director Surface Transport, Transport for London for his Contribution to the London Bus Industry. The awards celebrate the achievements of individuals working in the bus industry and say ‘thanks’ for the hard work of the previous year.

Victor was recruited in Barbados in November 1962 as part of London Transport's direct recruitment scheme in the Caribbean in response to severe labour shortages. He trained initially as a conductor at Chiswick and moved to Stonebridge depot working on routes 18,112, 260 and 266. In 1969 he became a driver at Stonebridge on route 18 and remained there until it closed. He then moved to Westbourne Park depot and continued to drive on route 18 until it moved to bendy bus and Willesden Junction. In total he spent 40 years on route18! Victor was the most senior driver at First’s largest bus depot in London. He has 39 years safe driving and an excellent attendance record. Over the past eight years he has also been a Buddy driver helping train and coach new staff.

Victor’s retirement party on 14th February was attended by a huge array of friends and colleagues from his long career. He was presented with his long service certificate and will also be receiving a lap top computer, which will help him keep in touch from the Caribbean, where he plans to spend some of his retirement.

Speaking at the event, Westbourne Park depot general manager Jim Thorpe said:

‘Victor’s record is now legendary. He has been a wonderful example to all at Westbourne Park, especially the younger drivers. He has only ever been at Stonebridge and Westbourne Park depots and latterly he has been a Buddy driver and in this role as well he will be a very hard act to follow. 45 years in the manner Vic has done his service is an amazing record and I would like to wish Vic all the very best for a well deserved retirement.’
