Bus drivers tackle Three Peaks challenge
The twelve London bus drivers (from different bus companies) originally selected to drive a London bus to China as part of the preparations for the Beijing Games, have decided to tackle the 3 Peaks challenge to raise money for the Help for Heroes charity which supports injured Service personnel fighting overseas. Commendably the team wanted to make the most of their intensive training by taking on the UK's three highest mountains (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon) in 24 hours.
They will be accompanied by a 10-strong volunteer support team and they'll be attempting this feat during 20th and 21st June.
The drivers are being assisted by Mac Mackenney, the Beijing Bus expedition leader. They have already raised £16,000 through sponsorship from their bus companies and others and they hope to raise even more.
John Hickey from First’s Dagenham depot is taking part in the challenge. He said:
"When the Beijing expedition was cancelled the twelve of us decided that we wanted to do something worthwhile together as a team. Many of our instructors for the Beijing training were ex military and this was part of the reason we chose Help for Heroes as our charity.
I’m really looking forward to doing this, particularly the climb up Ben Nevis. At 59 I’m the oldest in the team so this will be a personal challenge for me."
