Aberdeen

AVL
Automatic Vehicle Location (or AVL) is a satellite tracking system which is currently used in Aberdeen to monitor our bus services. The system provides a constant monitor of service efficiency and the location of our fleet, and allows control room staff to identify problems and to manage the network so that there is minimum delay and inconvenience to our customers.
Benefits of AVL
- The AVL system allows First Staff to focus on a particular area where there is a known or suspected problem or to cover the entire network.
- The ability to locate and track each vehicle alerts us to when various disruptions cause vehicles to run late unexpectedly. As we are in radio contact with our vehicles, this allows quick responsive action.
- The ability to monitor timetables throughout the network recording lateness and early running enables corrective action to take place.
- The ability to produce history reports so that problem areas can be identified and continually monitored.
Realtime Information
First are currently working closely with Aberdeen City Council to introduce Real Time Information across the network of services. Real time information displays are already installed at many locations on the King Street corridor. Real time information displays are readily available at most stops in the City Centre and lets the customer know when the next bus is due to arrive. Real time displays are also available from both Park & Ride sites and in the Lighthouse cinema, in Union Street.
