Low-Floor Bus Boost for Southside

Nicola Sturgeon MSP with First in Glasgow's Executive Director

Bus passengers on the south side of Glasgow will get a boost from this week when low-floor buses are introduced on two key routes thanks to the citys biggest bus operator, First in Glasgow.

First has introduced the low-floor easy access vehicles on most journeys on services 23 (Govan to city centre) and 34 (Castlemilk to Govan) from Sunday (10 May), making it easier than ever for wheelchair passengers and those travelling with buggies to get around by bus.

The changes will help First deliver on its commitment to providing accessible transport throughout Greater Glasgow and the surrounding areas with more than two-thirds of Glasgows 1,000-plus bus fleet made up of low-floor vehicles like those that will operate on routes 23 and 34.

To welcome the introduction of the low-floor vehicles, Alex Shearer, Executive Director of First in Glasgow was joined by Glasgow Govan MSP, Nicola Sturgeon, to make the important announcement.

Mr Shearer said: "We aim to provide accessible vehicles for all our passengers, whether they are wheelchair users, parents travelling with babies in buggies or simply someone who cannot manage steps very well on their own and I am delighted to be joined by Ms Sturgeon to promote the introduction of these vehicles for services 23 and 34. Im sure they will make a welcome difference for bus passengers along these routes and enable more people to get around by bus.'

Nicola Sturgeon MSP added: "I am very pleased that low floor access has been introduced on these two routes. Accessible buses make life much easier for people who rely on public transport to get about. This will make a big difference for many of my constituents.'

The low-floor vehicles for services 23 and 34 came into operation on Sunday 10 May when a number of service changes were introduced across the First in Glasgow network. For full details please contact customer services on 0141 423 6600 (Monday-Thursday: 8.30am to 4.45pm, Friday: 8.30am to 4.00pm).
