Here are some of the issues/delays affecting First Bristol between November 24th and December 29th 2007. (Not including normal rush hour traffic)

Common issues during this period.

Road traffic accidents, roadworks, vandalism, football traffic, invalid tickets, bus cleaning, passengers taken ill on board the bus, vehicles parked in the bus lane, central congestion, various Christmas events, cars parked illegally/inconsiderately and delays in and around retail outlets throughout the Christmas period.


Ongoing work along the A420 corridor, particularly in the Lawrence Hill area causing severe delays throughout the working day. Affecting services: 6, 7, 36,41,43,44,45, and 332.
Ongoing temporary signals on Russell Town Avenue for Traffic management works. Services 6 and 7 withdrawn for safety reasons.
Works at the junction of Midland Road resulted in West Street being closed to a single lane causing delays. This affected services 4,6,7,36,41,43,44,45,48,49 and 332.
Delays on Easton Road, outside Lawrence Hill depot due to works leading onto the Lawrence Hill roundabout
Diversion due to sewer repairs in Emersons Way. Affecting services 48 and 49.

Monday 26th November

08.48 Road traffic accident in North Street Bedminster.
Disturbance on the upper deck of Service 41, Church Road. The police attended.
17.28 Service 75 at Bishport Avenue was delayed by vans blocking the road causing difficulties for turning buses
19.00 Water main burst on Royate Hill affecting traffic along Fishponds Road affecting services 48 and 49.

Tuesday 27th November

06.00 Royate Hill closed for a burst water main.
18.00 M32 closed at Junction 3 due to multiple vehicle collision. All vehicles diverted via the slip road.
Further collision at Junction 2 at Eastgate roundabout.

Wednesday 28th November

06.00 Roadworks on the Cumberland basin.
18.58 Service 44a in the Bristol centre was delayed because a passenger was taken ill.

4th December


16.00 Congestion in and around the BRI due to the road being temporarily blocked by an ambulance.
17.00 Congestion reported as very heavy in the central and surrounding areas.


5th December

From this date Lamb Street, Old Market reduced to a single lane due to emergency electrical cable repairs.


06.00 Trinity Road closed due to a road traffic accident. All services affected in the area.
14.00 Delays in Broadmead with cars queuing to get into The Galleries car park.
15.00 Significant delays in the Brislington area. No specific reason
17.00 Rupert Street, Haymarket and the centre at a standstill causing delays to all services.

6th December

18.16 Passenger problem on Service 20 at Rockery Farm.

7th December

High Street, Hanham - closed for Christmas celebrations in the evening. Affecting services 4, 45 and 332.

High Street, Chipping Sodbury closed for a Victorian evening affecting services 342 and X42.

15:00 Delays on the Gloucester Road because of a road traffic accident.
17.14 Delays in Broadmead because of a police incident.

8th December

High Street, Staple Hill closed for the afternoon affecting services 4, 7 and 49

9th December

13.00 Congestion reported throughout the afternoon at most retail outlets areas especially the Mall.

12th December

08.00 Significant congestion on all arterial routes into the city. Incident between junction 17 and junction 18 on the M4 during the morning rush hour.
Temporary 3 way signals in place at junction of Whitehall Road/Gordon Road traffic tailed back causing delays.
08.28 Bath and Wells Road, Temple Meads at ‘a standstill
08.30 Traffic lights out at Aztec West not working.
18.00 Police closed Lower High Street, Shirehampton due to a road traffic accident.

13th December

07.00 Pilmsoll Bridge stuck in open position due to heavy frost. Weston, Portishead, Nailsea and Clevedon services all delayed all services operated via Old Swing Bridge.

Hotwells Road reduced to one lane causing major delays.

14th December

Victorian evening Portishead road closed

15th December

05:00 Due to a road traffic accident at Baldwin Street the road was closed. Services 6,7, and 36 terminated at Broad Quay. Services 349 and 339 were also affected.

13.00 Large German Sheppard dog left on service 48 at Emersons Green. Later reunited with the owner at the bus station.

16th December

09:53 Rhoyate hill temporary traffic lights causing a problem as parked contractors vehicles were totally blocking the bus stop.

17th December

From this date Totterdown (A4 Bath road) lane restrictions for footway works affected services 1, x39, 349, 339, 378
Royate Hill temporary lights affected services 48.49 and 342.
Hareclive road, Hartcliffe, lane restrictions for a pedestrian crossing affecting services 76 and 77
The Mall service 75 not operating to ASDA (service terminating at Cribbs Bus Station)
Services from Henbury diverted via Highwood Lane to Cribbs Bus Station as per the Christmas information leaflet

16:00 Cribbs Causeway very busy causing delays

21st December

Congestion at most retail outlets throughout the afternoon. The area around the Galleries car park was particularly busy.


22nd December

12.31 Cars that were parked on both sides of Westbourne Road meant there were few passing places delaying service 4.

Throughout the period the road works on Church Road, St George and Lawrence Hill, Bristol caused varying delays to Services 332 and 635.
Moor Lane, Weston-super-Mare remained closed and Service 14 diverted to double run via Worle Moor Road.

1400 : An accident closed Newbridge Road, Bath, services diverted via Lower Bristol Road and Windsor Bridge.
1800 : Accident closed Wells Road, Bath.

25th November
0800 : Accident on Durley Hill, Keynsham, and Service 339 diverted back through Keynsham and along the by-pass.

30th November

1100 : Delays to Services 318 and 319 on A4174 at Filton.
1520 : Accident on Brislington Hill caused delays to Services X39, 178 and 349.
1600 : Severe congestion in and around Central Bristol.

1st December

1030 : Traffic lights at Fishponds Road/Royate Hill junction stuck on red, some delays to Service 342.

2nd December

1300 onwards " Service 353 temporarily curtailed following a fallen tree at Chelvey Batch and flooding on the diversionary route.

1800 " 2100 " Gridlock in Bath City Centre caused by late night shopping.
1900 " Griffin Road, Weston-super-Mare, parked cars blocking the road delaying Service 13.

1300 " Low loader stuck at Barrow Gurney (A38), delays to Service 121.
1600 " Severe traffic delays on all routes in and out of Bath.
