Performance Statistics


These figures help us monitor performance and might help explain to our customers why a service may not have been running to time.

General traffic congestion, road traffic accidents, bad weather, road works, temporary lights and passengers taken ill on the bus are just some of the issues we face on a daily basis. We constantly monitor our services and the conditions on the road to help us gather information that will help us to run our services to time.

As a part of the monitoring process we constantly aim to achieve standards of punctuality and reliability set by Traffic Commissioners who are responsible for the regulation of the bus and coach services in the United Kingdom.

The required standards are 95 % punctuality where a vehicle can be NO MORE than 1 minute early or 5 minutes late at any terminus point.

Most recently, First has invested in a state of the art control room in Bristol which will allow us to track our vehicles at all times. The advanced technology not only shows where every bus is but also enables the operators to immediately identify if a bus is running early or late and communicate direct with the driver to quickly resolve the situation.

The information below gives examples of various issues and events that may have caused a problem on a particular route at any time of the day or night. We hope that you will find the information informative and helpful.

Bristol statistics

During the period 24 February to 29 March the performance statistics in Bristol were as follows:

Punctuality 85.6%

Reliability 97.9%

The following information is not a comprehensive picture but is designed to offer examples of various incidents which, affected bus services in Bristol. The key area being reported is traffic delays of which 575 incidents were recorded.

Temporary traffic lights
Until 29th February services 48, 49 and 342 were delayed due to temporary traffic lights in and around Royale Hill

From 25 February " 7 March there were temporary traffic lights on New Fosseway Road/Fortfield Road

Traffic signals
From 24-27 February services 36 and 54 were delayed as a result of temporary signals on West town Lane/Sturminster Road

Roads closed
South Road in Redland was closed for a two-week period affecting service 99

Roads restrictions
For a four-week period services X1, 350, 353, 354, 355, 358, 359, 362 and 364 experienced delays around Hotwells Road/Jacobs Wells Road due to road and lane restrictions.

Lane closures
As a result of the ongoing Broadmead redevelopment, delays were experienced on 3 March because Bond Street was temporarily reduced to a single lane.

Heavy traffic
Heavy congestion was reported in South Bristol on Saturday 1 March in and around Ashton area as a result of a local football match.

Road Traffic Collision
On 26 February an RTC was reported in the Bedminster Down area causing heavy traffic for up to two hours.

An RTC on 28 February caused delays for service 25 around Downend Road/Muller Road

Police closed Stapleton Road on 3 March due to a collision between Easton Way and Trinity Road. Services were delayed as a result of diversions in both directions until the road was reopened.

On 4 March the M5 was closed between J14 and J15 (Thornbury to Almondsbury) due to an RTC. Traffic was diverted via the A38 causing associated congestion and delays in North and East Bristol. The motorway was not reopened until 14.45.

Resurfacing work
On 24th February Russell Town Avenue was closed for resurfacing work

Sewerage work
Sneyd Park was closed for 3-6 weeks for sewerage work. This work affected services 40 and 40a.

Somerset and Avon statistics

During the period 24 February to 29 March the performance statistics in Somerset and Avon were as follows:

Punctuality 92.49%

Reliability 99.47%

The following information is not a comprehensive picture but is designed to offer examples of various incidents which, affected bus services in Somerset and Avon. The key area being reported is traffic delays of which 170 incidents were recorded.

Temporary traffic lights
On 27 and 28 February there were temporary traffic lights for two days at Wrington.

Delays were caused to services from Weston-super-Mare to Bristol on 29 February due to temporary traffic lights at Congresbury.

A number of services including 21, 21A, 102, 112 and 670 experienced delays due to temporary traffic lights in Highbridge on 17 March.

Traffic signals
On Monday 3 March traffic signals on the M5 junction 19 were out of action and caused delays to services X25, 358 and 359.

Roads closed
Service 678 was diverted via Saltford and Corston due to the B3116 at Burnet being closed on 2 March.

Bristol southbound was closed over the weekend of 7-9 March at Bond Street affecting services 332, 376 and 632 due to being diverted via Broadmead.

A serious house fire on Hawkridge Road caused delays to services as the road was closed and services were diverted.

Lane restrictions
Services were delayed on Hotwell Road as a result of lane restrictions on 18 March

Heavy traffic
Reported heavy traffic throughout Bristol on 20 March delayed all services.

Heavier than usual Sunday traffic was reported in Weston-super-Mare Town Centre on 23 March causing delays to services.

Road Traffic Collision
An accident on the A370/A371 junction caused delays to services 121 and 126 on 26 February.

An accident at Midsomer Norton caused 30-minute delays to services 173, 178 and 184 on the evening of 29 February.

Service 126 was delayed on 6 March due to an accident between Sidcot and Winscombe

On 25 March a car lost a wheel on Lower Bristol Road in Bath and caused delays to service 5.

Bridge work
At the end of February Aspen Road was closed for emergency bridge works requiring that services 13 and 14 were diverted
