Original reason for Nomination
On 14th September 2007, David Hawkins assisted a blind man off his bus. Not only did David guide the man off the bus, he also continued to help him across a busy road and explained to him where road works were positioned. He signalled to the men working at the road works to let them know that the blind man was heading their way.
We consider that David has shown a positive and caring attitude to customer service, acting above and beyond the role of a bus driver, clearly taking his responsibility for the safety of his customers beyond just the time they are travelling with First.
He has used his initiative, as he was clearly able to foresee the possible problems that would have been faced by the blind passenger and done everything in his capability to assist the passenger, exceeding both the expectations of the customers and us, his employer.
