At first glance a small industrial town, but dig deeper and you will be rewarded. At one time it was the second busiest inland port in the Midlands, the legacy this has left includes fine original warehouses, excellent Georgian merchant houses and the canal side Tontine Inn opened in 1788 to serve the thirsty bargees.
The canal basin has been sympathetically restored and pleasure craft populate it. A riverside funfair and amusement arcades complete the picture.
