Since the 11th century, Ludlow has had an important part to play in local history. Built on a steep hill with rivers Teme and Corve for protection it has long been recognized as a strategic site. The Earl of Shrewsbury built a castle here in 1085 to protect his lands from the Welsh. Later, prosperous merchants settled here, and wide Georgian streets contrast sharply with narrow medieval alleys.
There are several important buildings of note within the town. Readers House, a medieval stone building with a three-storey timbered porch, where Mary Queen of Scots was once held prisoner. The Bull Inn and Feathers Hotel are fine public houses and have been since the 16th century - well worth a visit!
