Our training programme takes place in the training school in our depot in Halifax. It usually takes around 5-6 weeks and is split into two parts:

Practical Test are undertaken during the third week of training. Whilst working towards this you will be required to pass a PCV theory and hazard perception test, both conducted in-house. All training is delivered in bite size chunks with a designated trainer.

  • Operating a ticket machine and understanding the fares
  • Experience of different types of buses
  • Understanding bus schedules
  • Gaining route knowledge
  • Skills in customer care
  • Defensive driving (training will follow after some experience gained)
  • Health and Safety in the workplace
  • Disability awareness

The training programme does not end when you leave the training school – you will be assigned a Mentor or Buddie who works with you during your early weeks on the job to offer support and encouragement, share experience route familiarisation and iron out any problems.

When you are in our training school and in your first few months at work, as you develop your skills further you will start to gather evidence to earn a National Vocation Qualification (NVQ) – a nationally recognised qualification.

As part of your ongoing driver develoment you will receive free in house enhanced driver training and will work towards a dCPC (driver Certificate of professional Competance) which will be an EU regulaltion from September 2008.

Currently, about 70% of our drivers are trained to this standard – with more working towards this qualification.
