Five great Scottish rail journeys at the ScotRail website

Tuesday 2 February 2010

Two more guides on great Scottish rail journeys can now be downloaded from the ScotRail website.

The leaflets are on scenic tourist routes of South West Scotland – the Ayr to Stranraer line and the Glasgow/Ayr-Kilmarnock-Dumfries-Carlisle lines.

The fully illustrated guides highlight the best of the varied and picturesque scenery and include information on the heritage and attractions of the areas.

They join three other guides available on the website which cover the West Highland, Kyle and Far North Lines.

The guide to the Ayr-Stranraer line was prepared by the Stranraer to Ayr Line Support Association with text by its chairman Richard Carr.

The Glasgow-Kilmarnock-Dumfries-Carlisle guide was produced by the Nith Valley Line Promotion Group, with text by Michael Pearson, author of the “Iron Roads" series of books on scenic rail journeys including the South-West Scotland and West Highland Lines.

Graeme Macfarlan, ScotRail’s marketing manager, said: "It is hoped visitors to the ScotRail website will be inspired by the guides to journey through Scotland’s most spectacular countryside and visit the places and attractions listed.

“The guides help rail play its part in encouraging tourism in addition to our great offers such as Kids Go Free, Club 55, the Highland Rover and Freedom of Scotland Travelpass."

The guides can be downloaded at http://www.scotrail.co.uk/content/scenic-routes.html and are also available at staffed stations on the routes.
