FirstGroup Christmas Support for Befriend A Child Charity

Thursday 22 December 2011

Aberdeen based FirstGroup, the UK’s largest transport operator, helped spread a bit of Christmas cheer last weekend by donating the use of one of its coaches to local charity, Befriend a Child.

Every year Befriend a Child holds a Christmas Party for many of the underprivileged and vulnerable children it supports.  The children attend the party with their volunteer adult befrienders and enjoy a traditional Christmas meal, party games, disco, magic show and a visit from Santa.

This year’s Christmas party (held December 18) took place at Ardoe House and was made possible with the help of FirstGroup as Karen Farquhar, Chief Executive of Befriend a Child, explains:

“Given the home circumstances of many of the children we work with, the Befriend a Child Christmas party is, in a number of cases, their only opportunity to enjoy Christmas as a child should.  We pulled out all the stops to give them a day to remember – Santa’s visit, complete with presents for every child, was the highlight.”

She continued: “We are very grateful for FirstGroup’s support – thanks to them we were able to provide transport, for those that needed it, to and from the Ardoe. The help we’ve had from the wider community has also been out of this world. There are too many to mention but we can’t thank enough all of the various individuals and companies that contributed to ensuring the event was once again a great success.”

First provided support to Befriend a Child following its application to First’s Charity and Sponsorship Committee.  Avril Gill, FirstGroup’s Marketing Manager, sits on the Committee.  “Befriend a Child is a wonderful charity that provides incredible support to the children in the City and Shire that need it most.  We were only too pleased to provide assistance.”
