Aberdeen MSP Lends Her Support to First Aberdeen Female Bus Driver Recruitment Event For International Women's Day’
First Aberdeen played host to Maureen Watt MSP, as she gave her backing to the bus operator’s drive to tackle the imbalance of the number of women taking up a career in the bus industry and challenge the stereotype that bus driving is only for men.
The King Street depot opened its door for a special International Women’s day event from 09.30am until 12.30pm on Friday, March 8th 2019 and invited female candidates to come along and experience what it would be like to have a career as a bus driver.
The First Aberdeen training team were on hand to answers candidate’s questions on all aspects of the role, whilst giving them a taster session of theory and driving skills required to drive the vehicles. All candidates were also offered the chance to get behind the wheel of the training bus to experience driving the bus for themselves in a safe and controlled environment.
Maureen Watt, MSP for Aberdeen South and North Kincardine, said: “To coincide with International Women’s Day 2019, I was delighted to attend First Aberdeen Ladies recruitment event on Friday 8 March and have the opportunity to drive a bus.
Achieving gender equality requires a commitment from everyone and I commend First Aberdeen for their part in encouraging more women to consider a career in the bus industry.”
Andrew Jarvis, Managing Director for First Bus Scotland, said: “There’s no escaping the fact that men outnumber women in the bus driving world, but more and more women are proving it’s a job they’re great at – and that bus driving is a career that suits them.
“We want to raise awareness of the fact that there are no barriers preventing women from working within the bus industry and that there is much more to being a bus driver, than just driving. Being a bus driver lets you use your customer service skills in a different way – to help people in the local community get around easily and efficiently.
“We’ve recently held female-only recruitment events, which have helped to change perceptions people have around being a bus driver and we’re now looking to run similar events across more of our depots across Scotland.
“We are committed to equality of opportunity, diversity and inclusion because we believe diverse experiences and attitudes help us better understand the needs of our customers. We are working to increase the number of females applying for bus driver roles within the business as we do believe businesses are more likely to have continued success if there is an even split of genders.
“Our bus drivers put smiles on the faces of our customers and make a real difference in their local communities and we have developed training courses for our drivers which are helping to strengthen self-awareness and build better connections with customers and colleagues.
“We’re working hard to change the stereotypes and to encourage more people to consider a career within the bus industry and we’re doing everything we can to encourage women into the roles we offer.”
