FIRST ESSEX BUS OPERATOR LEADS THE WAY WITH CONTACTLESS PAYMENT
- Local bus operator introduces contactless ‘debit and credit card payments’ across its whole bus fleet
- The first-time contactless payment has been made available on buses in the Essex
- Apple Pay and Android Pay also accepted in major move forward
From Monday 4th June First Essex will roll-out ‘contactless payment’ across its whole fleet, providing customers with the facility to pay for journeys using their debit and credit cards. Cash payments and paper tickets remain available, as an option, to purchase travel on the bus.
Designed to make paying for travel more convenient and accessible, the contactless option on First Essex buses removes the need to carry cash, while the fast and easy contactless payment will improve boarding times and lead to quicker bus journeys.
Steve Wickers, Managing Director at First Essex, said: “We’re very proud to launch contactless payment technology on First Essex buses. This is another major step forward in improving the journey experience for our customers and builds on our other innovations introduced, including mTickets and new journey planner app.
“The trend across the UK shows that more and more consumers are ditching cash for contactless, so this improvement, I’m sure, will be welcomed by our frequent and occasional travellers”.
Furthermore, the new ticket machines installed by First Essex also accept Apple Pay and Android Pay as part of the contactless roll-out.
In 2017, the UK Cards Association announced that contactless payments amounted to 32% of card purchases, an increase of 15% from a year ago, with total contactless spending in March 2017 at £4 billion.
Customers can pay with contactless for multiple tickets in a single transaction, as long as, the total amount is £30 or less.
Customers can buy the following tickets using contactless on board using their debit or credit card or cash:
- single and return tickets
- weekly tickets
- group tickets, including the popular 1 plus 2 at £5.50 and 2 plus 3 at £8.50 Essex tickets.
