Major investment sees First Leeds achieve the Yorkshire Business Masters Award
First Leeds has received a Yorkshire Business Masters award following a significant investment in ultra-low emission vehicles for the city.
The business was named the winner of the ‘Investment category’, which is awarded to recognise a significant commitment made by a business in the region. Around 260 guests gathered for the ninth annual awards ceremony, held at The Queens Hotel, which saw a further 12 awards presented in categories including innovation, investment, professional services and fast growth.
Improving air quality in Leeds is a huge priority for the city and in December 2017 First Leeds announced it would invest £71m in 284 new ultra-low emission vehicles by 2020. This investment is part of a citywide strategy to encourage behaviour change making public transport a more attractive option to reduce car use and overall emissions levels to improve air quality.
It was decided that the majority of the £71m investment would be made on buses with Euro VI engines, as these offer significant reductions in the most harmful pollutants.
A third of the total 284 ultra-low emission vehicles have now arrived in the city, which also incorporate enhanced passenger facilities including next stop audio announcements, USB charging points and free Wi-Fi – as well as a new “LeedsCity” external branding.
