Help with First Bus apps
Thank you for your continued patience while we experience intermittent technical problems with our mTickets App
These problems are only occurring during peak periods: 7am to 9am and 5pm to 7pm; preventing some customers purchasing and activating tickets.
If you do wish to purchase a ticket using the app, we would politely ask you to do this outside of these hours, where you should experience a problem-free service. If you have a ticket in your wallet, put your phone in airplane mode just before boarding the bus and you should be able to activate it as normal.
We are working with our mTicket App service providers to rectify the problem and are making progress to get normal service resumed as soon as possible.
Our drivers have been made aware of this situation and we’ll make sure you can complete your journey.
For more details please see here: mTickets issue.
Travelling by bus doesn’t have to be complicated; our apps are designed to make your journey simpler.

Our Travel app has been designed to help you know which bus to get, and includes timetables, journey planning features and bus service updates. To install our Travel app use the links below:
Getting started with the mTicket app.
- Download the App to your phone.
- Choose the area where you are travelling.
- Choose the mTicket that suits you.
- Set up an account and pay by debit card, credit card or Pingit.
- Activate your ticket before you get on the bus.
- Show the driver the ticket on your phone.
The mTickets app allows you to buy and store bus tickets on your mobile phone.
Show the mTicket on your phone to the driver and they will accept it just like any other ticket (you may need to scan your mTicket on the ticket machine). This replaces paper tickets and no ticket will be issued by the driver, although mTickets will be checked for validity.
When you buy an mTicket for the first time you will be asked to set up an account and give your payment card details, once this is done the mTicket will go into your mTicket wallet until you want to travel, at which point you activate it.
The details of how long it is valid for will appear on the mTicket on your phone.
When the mTicket expires it will automatically go into the Expired area of the wallet but cannot be used again like an active mTicket.
To transfer your mTicket account and tickets to a new phone – here’s what to do:
- Log off from your mTicket account on your old phone (if possible).
- Download the app and login to your mTicket account on your new phone.
- Check the wallet Ticket Wallet screen. There will be a pink panel containing a button to start the transfer process.
If the button is not visible, please ensure you have a data connection and refresh the app
For iPhone - to refresh: Tap the screen three times,
For Android - to refresh: Select Refresh from the menu button – (3 dots at the top right of the screen).
The first transfer is automatic, further transfers within 30 days are subject to approval.
Please don't attempt to share your ticket with somebody else.
If you experience difficulties please contact mTickets Customer Service.
In order to keep your account and payment details secure, our mTickets can be purchased through our mTicket app. Tap on 'Buy your ticket' in the official First Bus App.
Once you've downloaded the First Bus mTickets App, you just need to select your ticket, provide us with payment details, including a secure password to protect your account, and then you will be able to buy tickets which will appear in the ticket wallet on your phone. Just before you want to travel, activate the ticket and off you go.
There is no minimum purchase, you only have to buy the tickets you require. All tickets you buy are put in your wallet and stored until activated. You can buy mTickets in advance and always be ready for your bus journey.
You can choose to pay by card (Mastercard or Visa debit or credit cards), PayPal, Apple Pay (on iPhones), G Pay by Google (on Android phones) or by Barclays Pingit. We don't accept Maestro, Amex or Electron cards.
On the payment methods screen, select the 'Visa / Mastercard / PayPal' button. On the next page enter the details of your card. Once entered, your card details are encrypted and stored securely by the system (not on the phone) so you can reuse the card without having to enter the details again. The next time you make a purchase, the most recently used card (or PayPal account) is presented as the default option. If you want to use a previously entered card or enter a new one, select 'Change Payment Method'.
On the payment methods screen, select the 'Visa / Mastercard / PayPal' button. On the next page select 'PayPal Check Out' and the PayPal login screen will be shown. Enter your PayPal email address and password. If you want to be able to make future PayPal purchases on our app with this account, click the 'Stay Logged in for faster checkout' tickbox. Then select the card you want to use via PayPal and press Continue. The next time you make a purchase, your PayPal account will be presented as the default option. If you want to use a previously entered card or enter a new one instead, select 'Change Payment Method'.
On the payment methods screen, select the 'Apple Pay' button. On the Apple Pay panel, select the card you want to use (of those stored in the Apple Pay wallet) and enter your Touch ID. The transaction will complete in a few moments.
Tickets available on the mTickets App
These vary depending on the area of travel. Check your local website for details or look through the selection on the mTickets app.
Generally, mTickets will stay in your virtual wallet for 1 year, unless stated in ticket details on the App.
Once purchased and downloaded, your mTickets will appear as 'purchased' under 'My Ticket Wallet' in your App.
When you want to use one, choose the ticket you want (they are listed from oldest at the top to newest at the bottom) and select 'Activate now' – just to double check, you'll be asked to confirm that you want to activate this ticket.
When a ticket is 'Activated', the App will generate a moving image ticket on your phone's screen; this will stay active for the amount of time the ticket is valid for.
You need to show this to the driver when you get on the bus so they can check the ticket.
You do need an internet connection to purchase a ticket. The app also needs to communicate with our system to keep itself up to date when you're out and about. You do not need an internet connection to activate an already purchased ticket - so a poor phone signal where you board a bus should not be a problem. Please note the app is not designed to work with Wi-Fi only devices such as tablets and iPods.
You need an active and valid ticket to travel on the bus, if the mTicket is not valid, you will need to activate another, or pay to travel by cash or contactless and buy a ticket from the bus driver.
Show your active mTicket to the inspector in the same way you showed your ticket to the driver upon boarding. If you boarded using a single ticket which has since expired, the inspector will be able to see this in the 'Expired' section of the wallet.
Problems with your phone
Missing tickets are caused by your mTicket account becoming logged out or a prolonged loss of internet connection. To restore tickets, please ensure you are logged in and select 'Refresh' from the Options button (iPhone) or Menu button (Android). All the tickets in your account should then reappear in a few seconds.
mTickets are locked to the phone on which they are purchased. If you change your phone (or do a factory reset on some handsets), you can request your tickets are reassigned to your new phone. To do this, download the app on the new phone and log into your mTicket account. Then look in the wallet for the pink panel and the button to start the transfer process. The first transfer is automatic, further transfers within 30 days are subject to approval.
It is your responsibility to ensure that your phone has enough battery power to be able to show a valid mTicket to the driver and, also any inspector throughout your journey. If you cannot do this, you will need to buy a ticket from the driver using cash or contactless.
While you don't need an internet connection at the point you activate an already purchased ticket, a regular internet connection is required by the app to keep content up to date and secure. We don't recommend it is used on Wi-Fi only tablets or iPods.
