- With Express Mode for Apple Pay, customers can easily and quickly pay for their fare by just tapping their iPhone or Apple Watch without having to unlock first.
- Introduction of Express Mode for Apple Pay has been accelerated to encourage more people to adopt contactless payments
- First Cymru is first bus operator in Wales to introduce new Apple technology
From Monday 28 September, bus operator First Cymru has activated Express Mode for Apple Pay across its operating area. First Cymru is the first bus operator in Wales to offer this new payment method , which makes contactless payments easier and more convenient for customers catching its services. Express Mode for Apple Pay means customers with Apple Pay can now catch the bus and pay for their ticket using their iPhone or Apple Watch without needing to wake or unlock the device, open an app or use Face ID or Touch ID.
Customers will be able to enjoy the true ‘tap-and-go’ convenience of Express Mode for Apple Pay on iPhone and Apple Watch by just holding their device close to the reader, which will help make boarding even faster than before. For customers who normally use Face ID to unlock their iPhone, Express Mode for Apple Pay has the additional advantage of allowing customers to keep their mandatory face covering on while boarding the bus.
The launch of this innovative technology has been accelerated through the impact of the coronavirus, with the bus operator advising customers to pay by contactless wherever possible due to the government advice on limiting the spread of the virus. This new payment option is yet another cashless way for customers to pay for their bus travel, with over 55% of payments on our buses being contactless, meaning a great number of customers are set to benefit from this latest innovation.
Owen Williams, Commercial Manager at First Cymru, said:
During these unprecedented times, we wanted to offer our customers another way to pay for their bus travel. First Cymru was quick to introduce other popular payment methods on our buses such as the First Bus smartphone app and contactless, and we hope that customers with iPhone and Apple Watch will be delighted with the news that they can use their devices using the new Express Mode for Apple Pay technology. The new system will make life a little bit easier for customers choosing to travel with us.
Apple Pay is easy to set up. On iPhone, simply open the Wallet app, tap +, and follow the steps to add your credit or debit cards. To enable Express Mode for Apple Pay, go to Settings and select your chosen card in Wallet & Apple Pay under Express Travel Card.
