'Clever buses' being introduced on route 66 in Doncaster with 'Tap & Cap' fare-saving technology
- Eight buses branded ‘Clever Buses’ and introduced on route 66 in Doncaster
- Tap & Cap can offer customers better value, greater flexibility and easier payment options for their bus travel.
- Capped contactless payments, however many journeys a person makes
- Tap & Cap will automatically select the cheapest fare available for a customer based on the number of journeys they make.
From Monday 3rd August, eight bright shiny newly painted vehicles branded as ‘Clever buses’ can be seen travelling on route 66 between Bentley the town centre and Intake in Doncaster.
This is the first step in First South Yorkshire’s promise to improve the look, the feel and most importantly the delivery of reliable bus provision in the area. The brand gives route 66 an identity and will be the first of many improvements to be rolled out across Doncaster, Sheffield and Rotherham.
Why ‘Clever Buses’?
The brand links nicely with the recently piloted ‘Tap and Cap’ technology using contactless payments to cap travel charges. A customer will never pay more than £4.70 a day or £16.50 per week, no matter how many journeys a person makes. If a person currently pays by cash, moving to ‘Tap & Cap’ could save customers money when using the bus.
With ‘Tap & Cap’ there's no need for anyone to work out which ticket they should buy, as we work out the cheapest on-bus fare for travel. The price a person pays is based on the number of journeys they make but will never be more than our Day or Week ticket price. This way, if a person’s travel plans change, they will never pay for more for travel than they need.
The first two journeys of the day will each cost the same price as a single ticket at £2.00, whilst the third will be capped at 70p. Any subsequent journeys made that same day will then be free as your fare is capped automatically at the Day ticket price of £4.70.
We’ll also track a person’s bus travel across 7 days and apply our weekly cap, so, when the cost of travel reaches the price of our Week ticket, the price a person pays is capped again.
Nigel Eggleton, Managing Director at First South Yorkshire said;” I am pleased to announce the introduction of our ‘Clever’ bus brand into our Doncaster fleet, highlighting the new ‘Tap and Cap’ technology giving customers the piece of mind that they are receiving the best value ticket every time they travel.
“Our eight ‘Clever buses’ will be out and about turning heads from today as they travel between Bentley the town centre and Intake. The association with ‘Clever’ is related to the latest technology that has recently been piloted on buses in Doncaster, providing easy access for payment by contactless card or phone by simply tapping for payment with a cap on how much anyone will pay for travel, it’s as simple as that.
“As we start to ease out of lockdown, we want to make bus travel as easy as possible for our customers. We have safety measures and social distancing in place and with retail and workplaces starting to open up again, your local bus service with the latest ‘Tap and Cap’ technology is a cost effective and safe way to travel to destinations around the town”
