The City Red brand started in Southampton with 'the three' service spanning the two '-hills' across the city - Lordshill and Thornhill - in December 2010.
Since then, the fleet has continued to grow with the launch of the City Red routes 2, 11 and 7 followed by the new 10 from September 2015, which has since been withdrawn.
The City Reds are Southampton’s most modern and efficient bus fleet. All the buses are fitted with either Euro 5 or 6 engines, which make them among the most environmentally friendly vehicles currently on the road. This makes them ideal to run on at least a 10 minute frequency throughout the day in and around the city centre because they have a positive impact on air quality.

Every bus also now comes with a range of modern features that make travelling with City Red as pleasurable and convenient as possible.
- Leather seats now come as standard along with LED lighting while free wifi on all the City Reds enables customers to keep up to date online either for work or pleasure while on the move.
- There is now extra dedicated space on board the City Reds for wheelchair users, and extra space is now available for pushchairs.
- With Contactless payments now accepted on our fleet paying for your tickets has never been easier.
This is great news for all our customers, but the benefits of the City Reds do not stop there. You can also find out in real time when the next bus is due and when you need to get off at your chosen destination, a real plus if you are new to the city. All the buses now have Next Stop Announcements and Next Stop Displays. There is also real time information is provided at all bus stops across the city in conjunction with Southampton City Council, and our improved roadside information makes it even easier to plan your journeys.
We are proud to have brought back red buses to Southampton, and our City Reds provide a network of frequent “turn up and get on” services, designed to meet the needs of a modern, thriving city.
