First York encourages students to go cashless on the bus
First York has announced its 2018/19 University fares and timetable changes ahead of the start of the new term and is encouraging students to switch to mTickets for the best value fares.
The operator of the University of York bus services has introduced changes to its tickets across its 66 bus routes, starting 2nd September 2018.
Single trip tickets will be set at £1 or £2 depending on location, with the introduction of a new student day ticket providing unlimited bus travel around York for only £3. The popular Yorkey card tickets will also be changing with the introduction of a new 10-trip Yorkey card for £10.
Current bus users will also see some changes to the tickets offered on board with the best value fares now being offered on Yorkey cards or via the mobile ticket app (mTickets), which is available to download onto your smartphone, for free.
The mTickets app means users can buy their tickets in advance and use them when they want, without worrying about losing a paper bus ticket or having the right change for the bus. The move to mobile tickets is designed encourage people to buy tickets in advance, help speed up boarding and journey times and increase overall punctuality for the service.
Following feedback from customers there have also been several service improvements including an express service from the station to University in the morning (66X). In addition, the frequency Night Service (N66) will now be running every 15 minutes.
Marc Bichtemann, Managing Director at First York, said: “We’re looking forward to welcoming new University of York students and will be offering a free FirstDay bus pass, so they can try before they buy*. We also offer term time tickets, including the ‘All Term’ ticket, which covers all term time bus travel for just £175.
“The combination of journey planning, free wi-fi, real time information, contactless and mTickets, really does make the bus an increasingly attractive option for so many journey needs and if more customers converted to using mTickets or contactless, then this would have a huge impact on boarding times and would help us in the battle to speed up the bus. We look forward to welcoming new and returning students to York and hope they have a fantastic year!”
